Mary Kay Ash -- The Woman
Mary Kay Ash was ahead of her time; a visionary, an entrepreneur and a leader. If you were ever privileged to be in her presence, you could feel just how much she cared about the people around her and her legacy lives on.
In 1963 Mary Kay Ash, recently retired after a long and successful twenty five-year career in direct sales, sat down at her kitchen table with a pad and pen. She decided to write a book to help women survive in the male dominated business world. She created two lists: one contained the things the company she worked for did right and the other included the things she felt they could have done better. When she looked over the lists Mary Kay realized that without trying to she'd actually created a marketing plan for a dream company, one that could provide women with unlimited potential to achieve personal and financial success. Adopting the golden rule as her guiding philosophy she insisted that the best course of action in any situation is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The rest is history.
Mary Kay always encouraged both the corporate staff and the independent sales force to act as if each person they meet was wearing a sign around his or her neck that read make me feel important. Her achievements and value to the community were recognized with numerous prestigious awards she received during her lifetime with many more since her passing in 2001. Few companies can point to the lasting impact of a founder like Mary Kay Ash.
Today Mary Kay Cosmetics remains true to the values Mary Kay Ash devised while sitting at her kitchen table. Her corporate philosophy is just as relevant now as it ever was. Her impact and vision still live on in the company that bears her name.
