My 90 Day Fitness Challenge and Fuck You, Cancer!
Fear affects every area of your life. A 90 Day Fitness Challenge inspired me to say “fuck cancer”, I live my life on my terms. Last year, challenged me emotionally, physically and mentally. Until October, the thought of dying was with me daily. I was sure my trip to France in August would be the last time I would see my daughters, sons-in-law and 6 grandchildren.
Even Without Chemo, Radiation and Surgery, Your Body Changes
The changes in my body, from extreme weight loss to hair loss, devastated me. Tumors utilize so much energy there is nothing left to nourish the body, for anything other than the absolute necessities for life. In March, I dropped to 110 pounds and cried uncontrollably. The impossibility of gaining the weight back frustrated me. In previous years, when trying to lose weight, I would eat about 1100 calories and would drop about 2 pounds a week.
When I hit 101 pounds in the third week of August, the fear was intense. I was eating 3000 calories a day and barely able to maintain my weight. It seemed all I did was eat, sleep or do my alternative therapies. I did not realize how I looked until my granddaughter took a photo of me and from then on very few pictures were allowed. I just could not face the changes.
Taking Control of Your Emotions
The biggest challenge, controlling my emotions, required the most effort. I felt there was no future and the inspiration to work or socialize disappeared. The diagnosis was not something I shared with many people. In fact, there are extended family members and friends that still don’t know.
I educated myself on the vast number of alternative therapies available. I tried everything and continued to watch YouTube videos that shared other people’s experiences in healing themselves naturally. Every day, people with stage 3 and stage cancers are seeing results without the cut, burn and poison of traditional medicine. The drawback, when you opt out of traditional treatment, is that available cash disappears very quickly. I chose to sell my house and use some of the money to fund my return to health.
Make a Decision to Live Now
When I decided that the cancer was just a “little inconvenience”, the fear subsided bit by bit. Believing makes healing possible, as has been proven medically with the placebo effect. Joy returned. I started dressing up, took the time to do my hair and makeup and began socializing with friends again.
On a side note - Years ago, I had a surgery that required several nights in the hospital. Back then the first thing I did was do my hair and makeup, even if I was in the hospital. The day after the operation, the surgeon came in and saw me with my skin care, brushes and color products. She smiled and said, “I guess we can let you go home today.” In shock, I asked why. She responded, “When women take time for personal care, they are generally feeling well enough to be discharged.”
Why a 90 Day Fitness Challenge?
I will live and I will walk the Camino again in celebration of my restored health. By focusing on the future, I give myself permission to enjoy life rather than just exist. Exercise helps with oxygenation of the tissues, something that the “little inconvenience” does not like.
With the lack of activity over the last year, my muscle mass has reduced dramatically. The Camino challenges peregrinos daily which necessitates rebuilding my body. Completing the trip from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre requires a high level of fitness and I plan to walk with joy and ease.
